Calista ION Hot Rollers…Curls, Curls, Curls

The Calista Tools ION Hot Rollers Set in its complete glory.
One late Friday night, I got sucked into the QVC vortex and found myself transfixed as the hosts sang the praises of the Calista Tools ION Hot Rollers Set.  Purported to heat up instantly, be a breeze to use and yield the bounciest, most voluminous curls in mere minutes, I must admit I was curious.  However, in light of the fact these rollers were retailing for $99, I didn’t want to rely on the mail order process to test drive this product.  I was delighted when I discovered that these rollers were also sold at my local Sephora.  I picked up the set for long hair that weekend and so began my love affair with curling my hair.
My long, straight, heavy hair.
Allow me to provide a bit of background on my hair type and texture…I have a very long, thick, heavy, bone straight mane that can get tangly underneath and doesn’t hold a curl for more than an hour or so. I am not a fan of brushing my hair, but I do make a point of washing it everyday (it usually gets brushed after my shower).  I usually go to bed with it wet, and blow-dry what moisture remains in the morning. I love having long hair but am decidedly low maintenance when it comes to styling it!  In turn, spending the time to curl my hair never made a lot of sense since the payoff was so short-lived. These hot rollers, however, have changed my mind! The Calista Tools ION Hot Rollers Set claims to use:

“…technology that infuses 32 mineral powders, infrared rays, and wave motion into each roller when it is cast, lasting the life of the roller. This new technology infuses moisture, which results in extra body and added shine.”
The first selling point of these rollers is their packaging.  The set comes with twelve rollers for long hair (the rollers for short to medium hair are the same price and are just a bit shorter in length), twelve clips, a heating station and a very practical carrying case in which all components fit comfortably. This case is an asset to the set because it makes these curlers easily packable, abundantly storable (my case neatly sits on a shelf in my bathroom) and quick to clean up when in a hurry.
When I want full, voluminous curls, all I do is follow this simple procedure:
1. Plug in the heating base and wait about 5 minutes
2. Divide my hair into six sections at minimum or twelve at maximum.  If you decide to use more than six curlers, then you just add a curler to the heating base as space becomes available.  It really only takes a few minutes to properly heat, so by the time you’ve put in the heated ones, the newly heated ones are the perfect temperature to be effective.
3. Roll the curlers into my hair and use the clips to fasten them.  This takes less than three minutes.  I love the clips because they are the speediest and easiest way, hands down, to secure the curlers. Then, I can walk around and do what I need to do to get ready while my hair is “getting done!”
4. Anytime after about 10 minutes, remove the curlers one by one and shake out your hair for the softest, fullest mane anywhere!  It is important to note that the ION technology guarantees that you can leave them in as long as you want (I’ve lost track of time and had them in for even an hour) without incurring damage to your hair shaft…the longer you wear them, the more pronounced the curls.
In this picture, I divided my hair into eight sections and use eight curlers…one on the top, two on each side and three in the back.

AND THE RESULTS ARE IN….

Here is an example of the more pronounced curls that result from abut 20 minutes of curl time.
These loose, softer curls developed from ten minutes of wearing the curlers…it is key to note that this volume lasts ALL DAY (which is nothing short of a miracle for my naturally straight hair).

Bottom Line: The Calista Tools ION curlers have given me a new way to quickly achieve relaxed polish and style with my hair…this is a huge benefit to a girl who doesn’t even like brushing her hair much less setting it.  Once I use the rollers, my hair stays full, bouncy and voluminous all day long and I love knowing I can achieve this look with minimal time investment and no damage to my locks.  I know that $99 may seem like a very pricey investment for a set of hot rollers, but for me, it was entirely worth it since I use them, at minimum, three times a week.  I cannot recommend these rollers enough for those who seek soft curls at lightening speed!  **Update…my video tutorial with these rollers can be found HERE.

Ooo, your hair looks gorgeous! You got me wanting to try these curlers out now! Did you add any additional hair product to maintain the curls?
I'm very low maintenance with my hair as well and my hair is like yours minus the thickness :'( I never bother to curl my hair because it never last for more than 30 minutes! The stylist who cuts my hair told me it's because my hair is too healthy and that I need to do some damage to it! Lol…I went as far as trying a perm and that did not even take it! She asked me if I wanted to try again, but I said no thanks since I couldn't stand the smell of the chemical and not being able to wash my hair for 3 days, Yuck!
Perhaps this will be the answer to my desire for voluminous, soft, billowy curls *fingers crossed*
Thanks for the great post! x Naomi

      Hello Naomi,

Thanks for the wonderful comment! In response to your question, I don't use any other product to maintain the curls…this is definitely a testament to the power of these rollers. You and your stylist are correct…healthy hair tends to fight styling (and even hair color!) but it is good in the long run ; ) In light of our similar hair type, I bet you will love these roller as much as I do!

Let me know what you think if you get them and have a lovely week,

Wow. Those are beautiful curls! Like Naomi above nothing holds in my hair except to curl with a straightening iron which over time does some significant damage to my hair. I will need to check these out. Thanks for the review!

Gorgeous curls! I'm also low maintenance with my long wavy hair. Like you, I sleep with wet hair and don't really use styling tools. xo

Thank you, Kath! Always great to hear from you ; ) Long hair is so much fun but I have to keep in low maintenance to save some time in the day. Sleeping with wet hair is the best…I am about to do it right now!

      Take care…xoxo,

      Hello Janine,

I just checked out your review…I like the Calista rollers because they don't need to be slept on ; ) I never use any products at all to hold the curl…as long as my hair is completely dry before I put them in, all I need is 5-10 minutes for curls and body that last until I wash my hair again!

Hope that helps and do take care!

Thanks! This is a great review. I'm not one for spending any significant time styling my hair and my hair sounds very similar to yours so this is exactly what I was looking for! I was considering a digital perm but I really don't want to do something so drastic, expensive and creepy. Keep up the great work and thank you! This helped me a lot.

      Hello Iloveginger!

Yes, these are excellent for travel…I bring them on all my trips. The bag is about three inches tall and twelve inches long…totally packable and not the slightest bit bulky! Highly recommended!

    Hi,

I love the look of these, I have seriously curly unruly hair which usually leads me to use hot rollers to tame my hair (I don't like straightening my hair much and it doesn't hold for long no matter the products or brand of iron). I'm wondering if you think these would be a faster more effective way for someone like myself to get more manageable curls.

      Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your question…I do think that these rollers could save you some time…they heat up in under two minutes and are really easy to put in. The fact that the curlers use Ion technology to reduce frizz and actually improve the smoothness of the hair shaft could actually be a huge benefit for you and your beautiful curls. From start (plugging in the set) to finish (taking out the curlers), I can curl my hair with these in 10-12 minutes total…I use them a few times a week at minimum…love them!

Hope that helps…take care and have a wonderful weekend…xoxo,

      Hello,

I roll the curlers under and the clips are strong enough to stay in place on their own!
