Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer–All Shades Swatched!

Awhile ago, I posted a review of the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer in SX06 (my impressions and specific details regarding this product can be found HERE)…the pigment of this product is unprecedented and the lasting power is remarkable.  I have noticed that this particular post has been getting a lot of page views as of late because it is difficult to find true-to-life swatches of this foundation online. In turn, I decided to do a post that reveals swatches of as many of 16 shades of this product as possible…a mere two shades (SX 03 and SX 05) are missing!  I hope the following images are helpful to those of you wanting to try this renown product…

      Hello Faye Baby,

Thanks for your question…happy that you found your way to Beauty Professor! Based on the fact that you are a NC50 and Caramel in Colorstay and that you are also looking for a highlighter, then I think that you are likely #12 instead of #13. The chief difference between the two is that #12 is definitely warmer/more golden in nature while the #13 has a rosier undertone. If you are indeed more golden, then I think you are better off with the #12…the beauty of this formula is that it a tiny bit goes a very long way and you can always sheer it out by combining it with lotion or even a more fluid liquid foundation or pale illuminator.

I hope that helps…do keep me posted on what you decide!

      Take care,

Hi, thank you so much for the swatches! which shade do you think would be good for asian skin? I have yellow and a little pink undertone so its hard for me to decide! thanks sooo much for answering 🙂 !

    July 29, 2012 at 4:29 am
  • The Beauty Professor Reply

    Hello Pinkinablink,

Of course! This might depend on how dark you are. It sounds like you are more on the neutral side (with the yellow and pink undertone combination)….in turn, I think that if you are fair to light, then #5 might work well (unfortunately it is not pictured!). #6 is definitely more yellow (no pink in this shade!) and #7 is more neutral (with a pink and yellow undertone combination), although I think it is better for light to light-medium skin than it is for fair-light skin.

However, if you are as fair as your profile picture, I think that #5 will be perfect!!

Let me know what you decide and if I can be of anymore help!

    Dear beauty professor,

my current foundation is giorgio armani's luminous silk foundation shade #4.
It matches perfectly on my skin.
I want to try Kevyn's Sensual Skin Enhancer for better coverage.
I have warm undertone skin. Usually I go to golden or beige undertone
    when matching my foundation color.

Please suggest me a color that work on me. thank you in advance.=)

    Dear Beth,

Thanks for the question! I think that you could either go with #4 or #6 in Kevyn Aucoin's SSE depending on your tastes. Both shades are have yellow/beige undertones and are suitable for light skin. Because the formula it is so concentrated and you can also sheer it out with a moisturizer, either shade would likely blend with your GA Luminous Silk #4 skin tone.

I have a close up of #6 in a separate post on my blog and I would say that is closest to a NC 25 or so, if you would like to take a peek. If you are lighter than a NC 25 at this point, I think that, as we head into winter, #4 is probably going to be perfect for you.

I hope that helps and look forward to hearing what you decide!

      Hello Anon,

Thank you for your question…it depends on the undertone you desire. The #3 is a very light neutral shade; if you are more golden/yellow in undertone (and it sounds like you are) and want a highlighter that matches that undertone, then the #4 is the right choice. If you want a "whiter" look then the #3 would be perfect!

      Hope that helps,

      Hello Lena,

Great question! In light of your skin tone (and the shades that currently wear), I suggest the #8. I think that the #6 will definitely be too light and the #7 will be closer, but likely be too light as well!

      Hi Lena,

Glad to help ; ) If you are closer to a NC 35 and don't expect to get much lighter this winter, then I do think the #10 could work; the #8 is just a hair lighter with stronger golden yellow undertones (when I am a NC 30 in the summer, that is the shade that I like to use).

Hope that is useful…let me know what happens!!

    Hi,

thanks for the swatches!!! Unfortunately, there are the two shades missing that I might need… 😉 I´m wearing NC20 in the summer and now I am already a tad lighter than that. I don´t even know, which MAC shade I am right now, I´m using a BB cream (Elisha McCoy and SKIN79) at this time of year, but this doesn´t offer me the coverage that I want. And because I live in Germany, I have no chance to swatch the SSE, sooo…. I need help.

I was wondering, if it is possible to mix two shades of the SSE? I´m thinking of #3 in the winter and #7 in the summer and everything in between I could mix and match…. What do you think?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations and thoughts!

      Hello Stefanie,

Thank you for your question! I am so sorry that the #3 and #5 were suspiciously missing from the line up! The good news is, I owned #5 in the past and I can confirm that it is about a NC 20 or so (probably perfect for you right now). However, if you are looking to order two shades to mix and use for the whole year, I think that #3 and #7 would be a perfect choice. #3 will give you the NC 18 or so match that you are right now and, as you get darker, you could gradually integrate a bit of #7 into the mix.

I hope this information helps…do keep me posted on what you decide and have a wonderful week!

Thank you soooooo much! I think, I will go for the "mix and match" with the shades #3 and #7. Unfortunately, Space NK (UK) is out of stock with #7 (of course, grrrr), so I will start with #3.

      I don´t know why, but I´m really excited to try it… 😉

      Thanks again!

My pleasure, Stefanie! How frustrating that Space NK is out of #7! It is an extremely popular color for light to light-medium skin tones so I am not surprised that it is at a premium. I hope you get it soon!

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on #3…I am thinking…if you don't think you'll be getting #7 for awhile, #4 might be a good in-between shade for you that could work in the meanwhile! I don't want to create confusion but it just might do the trick ; )

You are a gem! I actually think, you are right. Yesterday I´ve got my MAC Mineralize Foundation in NC20 out and I swatched it. And what can I say? It fits perfectly. I dont know why, but I try to persuade myself that my skin has a neutral undertone, but apparently it doesn´t 🙂 I have a warm undertone and so I think shade #4 might fit better than the neutral shades #3 and even #7.

Aaaand I discovered: On Misebeauty.com are all SSE shades available!!! And they ship to Germany! Wohooo! They also have the GlamGlow Mud Cream in stock (I´m dying to try that, too!).

What I just think: Are the SSE pots sealed or can one have a peek of the color without ripping of any aluminum foil?

Thanks again. I do very much appreciate your support and your time! As I said: You´re a gem!

      Hello Stefanie,

I am so glad that my suggestion makes sense…I didn't want to sway your mind but I bet that #4 (or even #6 which is a NC 20-NC 23 or so) would be perfect. Hooray for finding all of the shades available online, too! I just looked up the GlamGlow Mud Cream and agree, that looks like a promising product!

In response to your question, the SSE pots I have bought in the past (in the USA) do not have a foil cover…just a screw on cap, so, as long as it is the same internationally, it should be very easy to take a peek without disturbing the product packaging.

Take care and keep me posted…thanks for being a lovely reader!!

      Hello Queen Diva Ex!

Thanks for the comment…I am thrilled to hear that you have found your perfect matches in this foundation! It is such a versatile formula in the way that it can be mixed, blended, sheered out and buffed in! My best guess would be that for highlighting, #2 or #4 would be great…I think I would go for #2 since it is light and will definitely highlight most easily. Then, for contour, it just depends how dark you want to go…I would choose #14 because it is closest to a dark cream bronzer and will be easiest to blend in with your current skin tone!

I hope that is helpful!! Please keep me posted on what you decide!

Im looking at the SX 8 or 11 because 12 looks like it would b a good summer foundation for me. Do you have any suggestions? Im excited to see such rich yellows. Thank you in advance…

      Hello Anon,

Thanks for stopping by! You are right…the SSE have amazing yellow tones…some of the best on the market (in my opinion!). As a NC 44, I am guessing that #11 would be perfect for you. The golden undertones are very pronounced and the shade is consistent with the NC 44 depth. Then, if it find you need more color, you can pick up the #12 (in preparation for summer) and mix to your liking (I like to do this with the #6 and the #7 or #8).

I posted earlier and deleted the post because I just came back from the Mac counter to double check my colour (in winter I lose all my colour) and I am definitely a NC 30. Blends seamlessly into my skin. In the summer I would go up to a NC 35. I do have patches that are lighter. My skin does not have obvious yellow or pink tones. I am thinking that the 8 would probably work but worried it might be too yellow. Any thoughts?

      Hi Jas,

With the skin tone that you have, I think that the #6 should be a great match. However, between the KA SSE and the By Terry Cover Expert, you may want to try the By Terry…it has medium to full coverage, looks velvety and natural and is very long lasting. It can be applied straight from the tube with a foundation brush for an absolutely flawless finish!

I hope that helps…take care and keep me posted!

    Hello Beauty Professor,

I'm interested to use it to cover my dark undereye circles, but having a hard time choosing the right shade. After looking at your swatches(by the way it's very helpful!), I'm thinking may be #7 or #10, what's your opinion? I'm about NC 25 to 30(may be a littleeeeee bit closer to NC 25, it depends) and having quite dark discoloration around eyes. I'm using the Bobbi Brown corrector in Peach then followed by skintone concealer to cover my dark circles at the moment and I am looking forward this enhancer can do all in one!

In compare of the BB's corrector, I think this is much cheaper, $45 for 18g of products! Looking forward to hear from you soon! Thanks!

    Hilda

      Hello Hilda,

Glad to hear that my swatches were of use for you! If you are looking to use this as a concealer, I suggest selecting the #6 (light beige with strong yellow undertones) or #7 (light beige with neutral undertones)…any darker and I don't think it will give you the lightening and covering effect that you seek.

I truly hope this is helpful…take care and let me know if you have other questions,

      Hello Beauty Professor,

Thanks for your reply! Yes, your swatches does a big help as it's really hard to pick colors online without real swatches. I'll consider between #6 and #7 then, is #7 yellower than #6? Some said it is, but as from your swatch, it isn't, it's a bit confuse here~ If you don't mind, I still have several questions which I would like some opinions from you. 🙂

As an undereye concealer, will it be too dry? If I use it as overall foundation, does it photographs well? It seems that SSE doesn't contain any SPF?! I have combination skin, do you think it will sit on my skin well? Yes…I know, I do have lots of questions for you…:P Lastly, I'm wondering what's the difference between a golden/yellow undertone and a beige undertone? I always think beige = yellow undertone.

Thanks a lot for your time and help!
And hello from Hong Kong! Have a good day!

      Regards,
      Hilda

      Hello Hilda,

My pleasure! In my experience, #6 is a touch lighter and more golden than #7, which is a hint darker and a little more neutral (although it still has pronounced yellow undertones). The beauty of this product, is that you can mix it with moisturizer to sheer it out, or use it full strength for maximum opacity.

A little bit goes a very long way, so it can be used as a concealer, and if you think it feels too dry (I haven't felt this way), you can add a bit of moisturizer to give it the texture you want. It does indeed photograph well (and it doesn't contain any SPF)…it just looks like very perfect skin ; ) I have combination skin as well and it doesn't feel too heavy…it does, however, contain mineral oil (which my skin doesn't have a major issue with)!

To me, a golden yellow undertone is "warm" with pronounced yellow tones. Beige undertones are more neutral (an equal combination of yellow and pink). A cool beige leans very pink (rather than yellow).

      I hope that helps!!

Take care and have a wonderful week…xoxo,

      Hello Beauty Professor,

Thanks for your advice and it helps a lot! I think I will try #7 according to your suggestions.

In speak of mineral oil, it has the chance to clog pores right? What's the bad thing besides that?

But how can I tell if I'm a neutral undertone or a yellow undertone? I'm Asian and usally I tend to choose yellow based products: Bobbi Brown Peach corrector and Warm Beige concealer, L'oreal True Match foundation in G3, Laura Mercier Secret Camflouge concealer in SC4 and NC in the M.A.C color system…I don't really know how to tell if one's a neutral undertone or yellow, kindly advise!

Thanks again! Have a great day!

      Regards,
      Hilda

      Hi Hilda,

Happy to help ; ) Glad you feel like #7 will work for you. In my experience, there is nothing wrong with mineral oil…however, any oil
(as well as a variety of other ingredients) can clog pores of certain individuals with sensitive skin. I have very sensitive skin but haven't been bothered by products with mineral oil, so everyone is different.

The skin you describe would make me think that you are likely yellow in undertone…warm beige, MAC shades with NC and L'oreal G (golden) 3 all support this assumption since they are all shades that have yellow/golden undertones. It sounds like you are on the right track when it comes to finding products that match your skin!

Take care, keep me posted and have a lovely week…warm regards,

      Hello Beauty Professor,

Looking forward to your new videos! I always wonder how can you manage to make videos and blogs and so many swatches….as I guess you must be pretty busy with your daily work as a professor!

Do you mean my favorite brands in Hong Kong? We do have makeup brands from HK, but not popular. Here Japanese brands are very very popular, like Shiseido, Shu Uemura, Kose… Some people think it suits Asian skin better, style, color and texture. Other common big brands are also very famous as well like M.A.C, Bobbi Brown, Benefit…etc. However, brands like Kevyn Aucoin, Rouge Bunny Rouge are not available in HK, that's why I like to read your blog, your posts are imformative and I can get to know more of the new beauty brands from you. We do have Tom Ford counter but the brand is not popular at all, and very expensive.

Personally I quite like Shu Uemura, the whole concept and the style of their shop display, packaging and their products; I like Bobbi Brown as well but I think they are too overpriced, one single concealer costs around $230HKD, it's about 30USD, more or less, it's too expensive for a product only contain 1,7g, that's why when I saw the Kevyn Aucoin SSE, I actually think the price is good as compare to BB's!

In general, cosmetics in Hong Kong are more pricey than in US or Europe, no matter those in drugstore or in department stores. If consider to buy online, the shipping fee is usually $$$ to ship to HK 🙁 So I would be very happy if I have chance to go to US, I will stock up some makeup, it will save me lots of money!

Have you spend lots of time on reading this already, I'd better stop here and wish you have a wonderul day!

      Regards,
      Hilda

      Hello Hilda,

Thank you for watching my videos and yes, it is always a fun challenge for me to balance my professional obligations with swatching, posting and filming videos for YT! I love Shu Uemura as well…the aesthetics of the line are quite beautiful; I especially like the Nobara Cream Foundation and lip color. I haven't heard of Kose but did a quick online search to read about it! Like you, I am intrigued by any brand that is not easily available where I live ; ) Since the Kevyn Aucoin product is so pigmented and concentrated, it is indeed a reasonable deal. That is interesting that cosmetics are most expensive in Hong Kong..I had no idea!

Have a wonderful rest of the week and talk soon…xoxo,

No worries, Krishna…I am so glad to hear that my swatches were helpful for you! I am sorry you picked up the wrong color the first time around…that is frustrating! For a NC45 skin tone, I would suggest trying #12. It has the golden undertones that you need and the next few shades up are all "neutral to chocolate rosy beige" (phew…that was a lot of adjectives!) in nature. I have combination skin and this product works for me…nothing is "touch up free" with the exception of the Revlon Colorstay Whipped (at least in my experience) but this lasts on most skin types!

I hope this helps…please keep me posted on what you decide and have a lovely week–xoxo,

I know what you mean…the names are so similar!! I am so happy that you are falling in love with the Sheer Expert! I have indeed tried a couple of Asian BB's…most recently, the one by Nanonce. I haven't experienced the Ginerva but it sounds wonderful! I like mixing the KA on the back of my hand…as long as I work fast (and I have to because I don't have much time in the morning!), I get the best outcome. I also have a little sample pot of the By Terry and KA already mixed up so I can grab that in a hurry when I need it!

      Hope your Monday was wonderful…xoxo,

Fantastic! I am so glad you were able to find these gems! I think you will be happy with #2 in the Peau Vierge…it is light neutral beige and I can wear it all year without the shade being off (I range from NC/NW 20-NC 30 from winter to summer).

So happy you might get this…it is absolutely and utterly one of my favorite products!

Thanks for the reply…greatly appreciated, as always!!! The #2 sounds great…I also meant to ask you what colour you'd advise me for the Peau Vierge foundation or would you not recommend this for me??I've looked at all the swatches you've put up but I'm still unsure of which one? #4, 5, or 6 sounded like it'd be in my range…which one do you think?? Or would you suggest a different number altogether?
Looking forward to hearing your suggestions:)

      Hi Andrea,

As always…my pleasure! In terms of the Le Metier de Beaute foundation, I am guessing that you could get away with #4 (if you want to stay a bit lighter) or #5 (if you anticipate getting a bit more color at some point). The foundation is just beautiful…great coverage and a beautiful finish.

Hope that helps…do keep me posted…xoxo,

      Hi Anon,

For NC 42 skin, I suggest #12 for now and #13 for when you get darker…the beauty with this formula is that you can always mix the two shades at any time of year to get the perfect tone!

      I hope that helps!!

Hi, I am also having a hard time choosing the correct shade. I was matched to NC25. I am half asian and have some yellow undertones. 8 looks to dark, but I cannot decide which would suit me better 6 or 7.

      Hi Kimmy,

Thanks for the question. The main difference between #6 and #7 is the undertones. #6 has very golden pale yellow undertones and #7 has neutral to yellow undertones. I actually prefer #7 in most cases, because it just looks more natural overall!

I hope that helps and wish you the best in your search,

I'm really excited to try this product, however I'm a little unsure about my shade.
I'm around an nc35-nc40 in MAC, I use nars sheer glow in the shade Barcelona.
I was thinking the shade 8 or 11, but I can't decide between the 2. Which would you suggest?

      Hi Anon,

My pleasure! I think you are wise in whittling your potential shades down to #8 and #11…would say that #8 is approximately NC30-33 or and #11 is more in the NC 35-40 range so I think you would be best off with the #11!

      Hi Nona,

In the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer, I am thinking that you will be happy with #5 (not pictured, but it is a light beige with neutral undertones) or #6, which is a yellow beige (but decidedly NOT orange or peachy). In the By Terry, #7 should be the right match. It does not oxidize!

    Hello,

First I want to thank you for the swatches. I need some assistance in choosing the right shade for the winter and summer. Maybe even using it for highlighting and conturing. I have oily combination skin, Medium skin tone ( in the summer medium tan) with both pink and yellow undertones. Right now I was match at Mac as an NC 30 in Studio Fix. In the summer I usually wear Make Up Forever HD in 128.

      Hello Alejandra,

Thank you for the comment…I am so glad the swatches are helpful for you. Based on your current matches, I suggest #7 (as the lightest…this is a good mixing agent/highlighter for skin your tone as well), #8 (should match you now) and #9 (the most rose beige…to achieve a any pink tones that might be lacking in the #8). I like mixing shades to get the perfect tone and this particular formula is perfect for combining. I hope this helps!

I use the balm maryloumanizer as a highlight and the balm bahama mama to contour. I think #7 or #8 would match my skin perfectly but are there two shades u would reccomend that would allow me to contour/highlight and b able to match my skin all year round? Am i crazy? You are right on track with #7 and #8 to achieve the effects you are hoping for…#7 is a great neutral light beige and #8 is a very golden light/medium beige (closest to the Revlon Warm Golden) so mixing the two should give you endless options. My pleasure, Diane! Depending on how you mix them (and if you incorporate a highlighting fluid like MAC strobe with #7 etc.), you may get the highlighting you need from #7. I recommend #12 for your contour…it has the right undertones and should add shadow without looking harsh! It is similar in depth and tone to my Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate in Intensity 01 ; )

Hey! As everyone else has said, thank you so much for doing the swatches. It's always so hard to figure out what shade will be the most appropriate one without trying them out or seeing them in daylight, given that my skin tone likes to fake people out. For example, when I go into a store, I like to know exactly what shade I'm looking for, because when the associates try to match me, they always try to put me in a color darker than my skin tone, or something that's more red when my undertones are yellow. They're always amazed when I direct them to the more correct shade…and it works! These swatches will help me save a lot of time and wasted effort. Thank you again! 🙂

      Hi K. Nicole,

Happy to oblige! I totally know what you are saying about preferring to match your own skin to foundation rather than to acquiesce to a sales associate. I can't tell you how many times I hear other women say that they always get matched to something a shade darker or with incorrect undertones. I've been doing this since I was modeling in college…often, I would try to gently and tactfully tell a makeup artist during a job that my concealer in SC-3 (the best match of my life for 10 years and counting) would blend more flawlessly into my skin better than any shade they could choose and, if given the chance, they would always agree ; ) We know about our skin!! What are some foundations you are loving these days?

Hello again! And yes, it happens to so many women, and it frustrates me to see women go home with the wrong color because they didn't speak up (as you said, there's a polite and tactful way to do this…) and let the sales associate know that it's not the right fit. I remember wanting to try NARS Sheer Glow, and I asked an associate about the different shades. She tried both Trinidad and Tortuga on my face, and I let her do it, even though I knew it wasn't going to work. Sure enough, it didn't. I lightly asked her to humor me and try New Orleans. 😉 She said that it would probably be too light, but we'd try it anyway. Guess what? It was the right one. We had a good laugh, and went on about our business. lol I did like that particular foundation for awhile, but it mildly irritates my skin during the Summer. Humidity issues? I don't know. Right now I'm just using MUFE HD Microperfecting Primer in #4 (Caramel)…by itself. o_O Oddly enough, it works for me on its own, but I'm also waiting on the Sensual Skin Enhancer to come in the mail. So we shall see. Excited! 😀

      Hello K,

I totally agree with you! Some cosmetic counters can be quite intimidating and its egregious when women get wrangled into buying things that the SA insists upon, without really wanting them. You are brave to let them try things on your face…I can't do it…usually I am already wearing makeup and the thought of having to endure additional application while in a busy store brings me undue stress ; ) So glad that the MUFE primer by itself is working for you…your skin must be amazing! Oh my gosh, I thought I'd responded! Sorry about that! Absolutely agreeing with everything that you've said. 🙂 Normally when shopping for foundation, I go in with no foundation on just to make the process easier. As for the MUFE primer by itself, I'm quite amazed that it works alone as well! Haha! My skin is not too shabby, but honestly, it's about 85% genetics and 15% good skin care. My mother's skin? Absolutely flawless. This is a woman who can wash her face with a bar of Dove soap, throw on any kind of moisturizer, and call it a day. I don't think she's ever had acne, no dark spots, no wrinkles, no nothing! She doesn't need it, but she does love her foundation! Haha! I plan to do a post with and without foundation and with just the MUFE alone soon. I will shoot you a note with the link when it's up. 🙂

Hi there! I've been trying to figure out which shade/s I should go for with the Kevyn Aucoin SSE. I am an MAC NC 35/Bobbi Brown 4.5 Warm Natural in the foundation stick for most of the year, and probably go up to NC 40 in the summer. I'm naturally tan with yellow undertones. I'm torn between SX 8,10,11,12. Which one do you think is a better match? I'm rather apprehensive ordering it online without seeing it for myself, so I need your advice!

Also, what product/shade do you recommend for setting it? Do I even need to set it with powder?

Hi B.P,hope u had a good week. I have yet another question! I appreciate & rely on your opinion.I had gotten saw #6 & told u it was too yellow. I googled more swatches & came upon a girl who seems lighter than me & she looked great in #8! If I'm a 30in channel lift, would that be good for me? Beige works better than yellow even though I'm definitely warm with hazel eyes. I guess I need more neutral. Thoughts? As always, thanks a million.

      Hi Lynn,

Thanks for the question…#10 is definitely more neutral to rosy in undertone…a true medium beige, if you will. Additionally, it is definitely deeper/darker than the #6, however, I think that if you are finding the #6 to be a bit too yellow (and perhaps a tad too light?), then getting the #10 could be a fabulous option. Also, if you still have the #6, you could always mix a tad of it into the #10 to lighten it up should it ever be too dark for you!

Finally, #7 is also a neutral beige (as opposed to being as yellow as the #6)…it is not as "true beige" as #10, but it is also not as dark–this might be an option for you as well!?

      Take care and happy weekend!

Hello B.P., I need some help! I purchased 06 and it was too light. I then purchased 08 and it is much too yellow and slightly light.

Due to Rosacea, my face is pinker than my yellowish neck. I think I tend to look best in a yellowish peachy shade instead of beige. If I purchase 09 and mix 08 and 09, will I get a peach color? Will the peach darken it so it won't be too light? Or should I get 10 or 11? I wear Koh Gen Do OC2 (with a little OC1 mixed in); Guerlain Lingerie De Peau 02 Beige Clair is a beautiful yellowish peach, a little light initially but it darkens.

Any help you can provide is appreciated! This is getting to be expensive. Thank you.

      Hello Anon,

Thanks for your question…you are amassing quite a KA SSE collection! Try to look at it this way…by the time you are finished, you'll have infinite shades for mixing to create the perfect shade for your skin for the rest of your life ; )

I will do my best to give you some direction here…since you have some rosy tones and are getting too much light and yellow from the shades you currently own, I suggest the #9 (which is the rosiest of the beiges in this formula). I suspect that you could combine #6 and/or #8 and #9 to get a peachy neutral medium beige!

Dear BP, thank you for your quick and very kind response. You are right, I am on my way to creating my own personal shades!

I am already finding other uses for this product. I mixed #6 into sunscreen to see if I could just wear a tinted sunscreen and it was fine except for being too light. I also have a sample tube of Maifanshi foundation that is too dark and pink so I mixed #6 and#8 into it and it became lighter and peachy! Perfect!

Hello! I'm shade number 2 in the Armani Lasting Silk foundation, NARS Siberia with bobbi brown Porcelain (which is the lightest in the UK) a touch too dark, I am debating between SX1 and SX2. I am neutral with a massive for pink based foundations to go VERY pink.

      Hi ColourfulTears!

Thanks for your question…#1 is VERY light (almost white), so my inclination is to tell you to get the #2 which will at least have a bit of flesh tone. When you say that you have "a massive for pink based foundations to go VERY pink," are you saying you want them to go pink, or they oxidize to pink (and you don't like that!).

      Let me know!

They have a tendency to go pink, not sure how I managed to word that sentence so badly. Also just realised that Bobbi Brown Porcelain is the palest in the UK which is the same shade as Alabaster in the US. It would be the perfect match if it wasn't quite so pink.

Hi your blog is great! Trying to get the perfect match for the SSE, when I wore MAC I am an nc45, I no longer wear it because I find that it's too ghostly. I've since moved over to GA luminous silk, in the summer I wear a 10, I recently bought GA maestro in a 10, which ironically was lighter than the luminous silk 10, and works well in the winter. I want to use SSE as a concealer, which shade do you recommend? Btw, I have used ysl touché éclat in 5 and it was perfect under the eye. Thanks

    April 13, 2013 at 1:02 pm
    • The Beauty Professor Reply

Thank you, Anon! If you want to use SSE as a concealer, rather than a foundation, then I am guessing you want your concealer to be a bit lighter than your overall base. Is it to conceal the under eye area (in which case you want to go with a slightly lighter shade) or spots and shadows on your face (which might call for a perfect match for your skin).

If you want to go a bit lighter as an under eye concealer, then I suggest the #12, and if you are looking to match your base than #13 (on par with Maestro #10) or #14 (a bit darker than Maestro #10…as summer rolls around?).

      Hope that helps!!

Hello, BP! I feel like I hit the motherlode when I chanced upon this post and the exchanges in the comments section. Thank you so much for the brilliant info and for taking the time to respond to the comments.

Please you please help me find a my shade? Through much trial and error, I have found that my best shade is NW35 although MAs insist on giving me NC42 which is too golden/orangey on me. I do not have true yellow undertones but in the summer I combine the NW35 with a small drop of NARS Sheer Glow in Syracuse to help darken it a bit. I also wear GA Maestro Fluid in 7 combined with 8 in a 1:0.5 proportion. Not the best color match, but in the summer 7 by itself is too light.

Thanks in advance so any advice you can provide!

      Hello Panna,

Thanks for the comment! I am so happy you found your way here ; ) Based on your current matches, I will do my best to offer a suggestion…I am guessing that you would benefit from #9 and/or #10, which are a medium rose beige and true neutral medium beige, respectively. I'd start with #9 and perhaps add #10 to the mix as summertime hits!

      I hope this helps…xoxo,

      Hello Mara,

Thanks for the question! Based on your current matches (I wear the MUFE HD in #118 for a lot of the year as well), I am guessing that you could wear #5 (a light neutral beige) on the light side and #7 on the slightly darker side. If you are able to get both, then you will be able to mix to your heart's content. Both of these shades are neutral beiges that lack a strong yellow or orange undertone!

      Hope that helps,

I'm a new MUA and would like to add this to my kit, what would you say are the must-have shades? I am pretty good at mixing and matching foundation, so I figured I don't need all 16 shades in my kit.

Please let me know what you think!

      Hello Michelle!

So happy you found your way here and are enjoying my blog! With regards to your question, this foundation is conducive to mixing, so I think the must have shades for your kit would be:

      1. #1 (as highlighter, to lighten other shades)
      2. #7 (matches most light beige skin tones)
      3. #9 (the rosiest color in the line…good on its own or for adding rosy tones to other shades)
      4. #10 (a true medium neutral beige)
      5. #11 (a very warm medium beige)
      6. #16 (the darkest shade for the darkest skin tones you may encounter, but you can use the lighter shades to create a lighter shade as well!)

Hope that helps and do keep me posted on what you decide…xoxo,

      Hello!

With regards to your question, #6 is the equivalent of a NC 20 (with very pronounced yellow tones) and #7 is a NC 20-25 with neutral to warm undertones. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the Lancome PO-03 shade, but hope my further shade descriptions help you!

Hey! I love your swatches and they are very helpfull for me! I read all the commets and can't decide wich shade would be good for me. I've tried out the Mac Studio Finish Concealer in nc 20 and this was too light for my under eye area. I also tried Macs Select Cover Up in nc 23 wich was slightly too light and yellow for under my eyes. So I guess NC 25 would be perfect. I would like to use the Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer for covering the darkness under my eyes as well. I'm not sure if #6 would be too light. #7 looks a little bit lighter than 06 but the undertone would be right I guess. #8 looks way darker than #06 so I'm not sure wich one to pick. What would you say it the best match for NC 25?

Thank you for this awesome post and all of your replies! You have been so helpful!! 🙂 I'm actually interested in using the SSE as my highlight and contour. I used MAC Studio Sculpt concealers in the past, but they've been discontinued. 🙁 My foundation shade is a MAC NC37. I currently use a MUFE HD Foundation (#153) being that it is summer. I used MAC Studio Sculpt concealer in NC15 as a highlight and NW50 as a contour. Obviously I like a bit more dynamic HL/contour but I blend them out with a beauty blender. Could you please point me in the direction as to which SSE shades I should purchase for my highlight and then for my contour color. I like a yellow, warm color as my highlight and a cool, deep brown/grey color as my contour. Thank you so much!!! 🙂

My pleasure! I will try to suggest some shades that align with your purposes…for highlighting, I suggest shade #2 (very close to NC 15) and for the contour, I suggest #13, which is a darker rosy tan. You might be able to bump up to the #14 or #15 if you want something darker…that will just depend on your preferences and how much blending you want do do ; )

Happy to help! I love to highlight and contour but use a variety of highlighters (Chanel, Rouge Bunny Rouge, RMS, Edward Bess) and contours from Tom Ford (my favorite daily staple) and Chanel (Notorious is as great as people say it is!) rather than the SSE, only because I already own the products I've just mentioned. That being said, I have had many readers who love to use this formula for highlighting and contouring…it is so pigmented and blends like a dream with other products.

If you are #310 in Dior Airflash (I own and love that shade!), then #6 will be one shade lighter with very yellow undertones. #7 will be one shade lighter as well, but has more neutral undertones. The only other option might be #5 (not pictured) which is about 2 shades lighter than Dior Airflash #310 and has neutral undertones.

The foundation that suit me best, literally, and without oxidising is mac mineralize foundation in nc15.
Its the only mac foundy i own, and i read online that this foundy's shade is a wee bit off than the others, darker and the undertone is differrent frm the other mac's foundy.
I think i might be a sx03 or sx05, but both are not featured in your pics. *cries*
Im not sure how much fairer is sx03 from sx05….

Your sentence about sending me a piece of your skin made me laugh out loud : ) That would make things easier, albeit completely impossible! You are right, you could be either a #3 or #5, however, I would say #5 is closest to a NC 20-23 so likely you would be the #3.

Hi Beauty Professor! I am Asian with yellow/olive undertones (80-20). My face is half a shade darker than my neck/chest. For reference, I've used MAC Studio Fix Fluid in NC 25 before (NC 30 is dark), I think I'm NC26-27. I've posted below my other shades.

    1. I was wondering if I could use SX06 to mix with some of my liquid foundations/tinted moisturizer that's a bit darker and has pink/neutral undertones? Since this is extremely pigmented it would make the mixture yellow undertoned and more suitable for NC27? Or the texture of this foundation can't be mixed with liquid?

    2. I can't wear neutral undertones because it will appear pinkish on me later on (weird) that's why I crossed out SX07. But SX06 is light and SX08 is dark I think? For an NC27? So mixing would be the way to go.

Plus I don't like heavy coverage. Just tinted moisturizer or light-medium coverage when I go out to dinner/party. Here's my other foundations just for reference. I threw out most of these though or gave it away since it doesn't match me or it's heavy.

    Powder:
Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish Loose Powder in Pale Yellow 1 – a bit light but true/clean yellow
Chanel Poudre Universelle Compacte 30 – light, lighter than SFPFF NC30, whit-ish
MAC Blot Powder in Medium Dark – very ashy
MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation in NC30 – light in first application; after 3hrs it's a little dark; a little whitish; C30 is yellow-olive accdg to MUA but dark for me

    TM/Foundation:
Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free SPF 15 in Light to Medium Tint – perfect match
Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua B20 – beige-pink undertones, B30 is dark
Clinique Even Better #63 – pinkish after it settles, i don't know why
Giorgio Armani Face Fabric #2 – light, #3 – dark; so mix #2 and #3
Guerlain Parure Gold #3 – dark, like a bronzer!
Guerlain Parure Lumiere #32 – a bit light but perfect in store lighting, did not buy
Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Moisture Foundation #123 – too liquidy/oily
Laura Mercier Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer in Nude – a bit light
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Sand – dark
MAC Matchmaster in 2.0 – muddy pinkish-brown after 1hr, does not feel lightweight
MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 in NC25 – perfect depth, clean yellow, but no olive and full coverage!
NARS Sheer Glow in Fiji – a bit light, Punjab – a bit dark and brown so mix!
Nars Sheer Matte in Santa Fe – dark and orange yellow
Paul & Joe Protective Fluid 30 – too dark! brown
Revlon ColorStay (For Dry Skin) 180 Sand Beige – a bit light
Smashbox High Definition Healthy FX Foundation SPF 15 in Light 3 – a BIT light
Tarte Tinted Moisturizer in Agent 10 Conceal – light and shimmery

I'm using NARS TM in Alaska right now. Would want to mix KA SSE with my Clinique Almost Makeup Teint Naturel since I bought a shade darker (#4) and a little pink-neutral undertone, but it's the perfect sheer, "my skin but better" for me, lighter than a BB cream! Along with my GA Face Fabric #3 (a little dark with neutral undertone).

    4. And if ever I buy a GA Maestro (in #5.5 or 6.5?? what do you think is my shade for mixing? I think #5.5 doesn't have enough yellow undertones?)

and Guerlain Parure Gold #3 (the only thing stopping me from buying Maestro and Guerlain is their undertone and I can't find a perfect match). So basically I would make the SSE a mixing medium. Lol. Sorry for the long post.

    Thank you BP! 🙂

In response to your question, yes, I think that #6 will be the perfect shade for you to mix with slightly darker foundations to lighten them up and increase their yellow undertone. This mixes very well with all sorts of formulas…liquid foundation, lotion, serums etc….just a very versatile product. I do believe that #8 would be too dark for your purposes! In terms of the Maestro, yes, the 5.5 is likely too neutral for your needs…I suggest the 6.5; it might be too dark for your but if you plan on mixing a bit of the #6 SSE, then it should be perfect.

I hope that is the confirmation you were looking for!

Take care and keep me posted…xoxo,

Hello! I just want to thank you for taking the time to put up such an informative post! I've always had a bit of trouble with finding my shade however. As of right now I am 153 in MUFE HD. What I was wondering as well is if you could help me pick out a slightly darker shade for contouring as well as mixing for when I get tanned a bit more I would appreciate it soo much!!

Thank you <3 My e-mail is anitawarr[at]yahoo.com as well 🙂

      Hello Anita,

Thanks for the comment…based on your current color match, I suggest #12 for your purposes.

      I hope that helps!

Hi!!! I soooo need help! I'm interested in the Kevin Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer, but don't know what shade I should use. I use MAC NW 40 as an under eye highlight. My foundation Shade is Make Up Forever (MUFE) Matte Velvet No. 75 or MAC Studio Sculpt in NW44. I have a natural highlight in the middle of my face — red on the outside slightly neutral/yellow in the middle, but not too yellow closer. I can't wear MAC NC 50, it doesn't match at all and MAC NW45 is too red all for an all over foundation. Which shade do you think is best for an under eye highlight. I usually do two shades lighter (hence the NW 40 I use now). Any assistance you can give is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much! 🙂

      Hello,

Thanks for your question…in light of your current matches, I suggest #13 and perhaps #9 to mix in if #13 is a bit too dark (though I don't think it will be!).

      I hope that helps…

    Hi BP! 🙂

I am half-Indian and very interested in purchasing the SSE but I can only purchase it online. I am the shade Almond in LM tinted moisturiser (was recommended Caramel by the SA but was too dark for me) and I'm the shade SC-4 in LM secret camouflage. I've never actually used MAC powders/foundations but I think I'd be near an NC30. I'm really torn between #6,#8,#11.. Help!

    Many thanks xx

      Hello,

Thanks for your question. Based on your current matches, I would suggest the #8 as #6 will be too light and #11 is probably more of a NC 35 shade.

      I hope that helps!

      Hello Tiffany,

Thanks for your question. I would suggest #7 and #9 to start…you will be able to mix your perfect match with these to shade options. If you need to bump it up for self tanning, then I would also pick up #10. All three shades should take you through the year!

      I hope that helps…xoxo,

      Hi Lynette,

I am guessing that you could be #9 or #12, or perhaps a combination of the two.

      I hope that helps!

Hi! I'm interested in purchasing SSE as a foundation and a concealer. For reference I am a 5 in MAC's Matchmaster foundation, not sure if I'd be an 11 or 12 for foundation? And possibly a 9 or 10 for concealer? Your recommendation would be very much appreciated 🙂 Thank you.

      Hello Nicole,

Based on your current match, I would suggest #11 for your foundation and perhaps #10 as an alternate shade for mixing to get the perfect medium beige undertone.

      I hope that helps!

      Hello Sandra,

I am guessing that if #12 and #13 were much too light, then #14 would be the next logical step…it is a lovely medium caramel brown!

      I hope that helps…xo,

    Hi!
I'm asian, between NC15-20, Armani's luminous silk #3 is rather good color match at the moment, and I think I'm yellow/olive undertone, with a bit of redness on cheek. Would SSE in #3 be a good match? Thank you!

      Hello Yukari,

I think that you could get away with #3 (closer to NC 15) or #4 (closer to NC 20). The combination of the would likely be perfect!

      I hope that helps,

My pleasure! I actually much prefer the Suqqu Frame Fix N to the KA SSE. The Frame Fix has no fragrance, does not get oily as the day wears on and looks more natural in my experience. It provides great coverage but is not as concentrated as the KA SSE, however, I think that makes it easier to work with on the whole. I may do a comparison in the future, but definitely recommend the Suqqu in the meanwhile ; )

      Hope that helps…xoxo,

      Hello Chantal,

Thanks for the question…I actually don't know what shade nude in the CK foundation is…it isn't online. That being said, #6 is for light skin with very yellow undertones and #7 is for light to light-medium skin with yellow undertones.

I know this post was written months ago but I thought I'd try and get some advice anyway. I'm an NW20 and MUFE 118 color match. I have the darkest under eye circles and am the shade Light Bisque in BB creamy concealer. Which SSE wld be right for me! Thank you in advance!!

      Hello Kneece,

Thanks for your question…overall, I would suggest the SSE in #7 as it is a N 25 or so. #9 has a rosier undertone (and could be good for mixing in the future), but I fear it would be too dark for you on your own. I hope that helps!

Hi! I hope it's not too late for you to help me out with selecting a shade, and it doesn't help that I've been having trouble wrapping my head around the MAC shades (because I think my skin color changes a lot)! I'm medium/tan Asian, and I've been using NW25 concealer for the longest time, only to discover recently that I'm actually NW35 or NC40 for my foundation color (it is summer now though, and I've tanned a bit). I guess it doesn't help that I don't actually use MAC's foundations? I'm guessing I'm somewhere between SSE #8 #9 #10 or #11? My current foundation is Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua in BR22 – I know it has a lot of pink undertones in this one but it works surprisingly well on my face, and I've never liked having something too yellow. I hope that wasn't too confusing!

      Hello Jo,

Thanks for the question…I am guessing that you would be good with #7 and #10 and mixing the two to achieve your perfect match. You might want to throw #11 in for good measure to have access to the yellow tones it sounds like you have for part of the year.

      Hope that helps!

    Hey Professor!

MAC always wants to match me as NW25 but I find it a bit pink and I'd rather even out my skin tone with a more neutral or beige foundation, so in the winter I wear YSL Touche Eclat in B40 and in the summer B60. Is there a SSE that will match me all year or should I buy two? My best guess is #7 in the winter and #10 in the summer, but your swatch of #7 seems really light to me. Thoughts?

      Hello Guabi,

I think that the combination of #7 and #10 are your best bet but you'll likely have to mix the two in different proportions all year to create your perfect match…that is what the SSE is all about!
